How To Dress For Your Body Shape

Posted on August 20 2018

Finding clothes that fit and suit you is a whole lot easier when you know what pieces work best for your shape. Most women fall into one of four categories (although these can be overlapping) - circle/apple (thick around the middle), triangle/pear (larger at the bottom), hourglass (curvy but evenly proportioned), and rectangle/athletic (straight up and down). There is no one ideal body shape. Each have their positives and negatives. The secret is to learn how to dress your body shape.

Here are a few tips that may help and some of our designs to give you a visual idea. Remember some of these outfits can cross over into different body shapes. There are no hard and fast rules. What matters is what suits you best.

Choose the body shape guide that best describes you:

Pear Shaped Body Type aka a triangle shape

You may be this body type if…

  • Your waist is wider than your bust
  • You consider yourself to have fuller hips
  • You have narrower shoulders in comparison to your hips
  • You have a fuller rear

Guidelines For Dressing A Pear Shape

Play with proportions that elongate the body. Pear shapes look fabulous in statement tops that draw the eye upward and highlight the waist, back, or neckline. Accessories like dramatic necklaces and earrings are your secret weapon.

Hourglass Shaped Body Type aka a curvy shape.

You may be this body type if…

  • You’d describe your body as curvy
  • You have a well-defined waist
  • Your bust and hip measurements are roughly even
  • You may have fuller bust, hips, and thighs

Guidelines For Dressing The Hourglass Shape

The key to dressing an hourglass shape is to celebrate your waist and highlight your curves.

Apple Shaped Body Type aka an inverted triangle.

You may be this body type if…

  • You are generally well-proportioned
  • Your shoulders are broader than your hips
  • You are not necessarily as curvy through your hips
  • You don’t have a well-defined waistline (If you do, you’re likely an hourglass!)

Guidelines For Dressing The Apple Shape

Apple and inverted triangle shapes look best when playing up their full bust, their amazing legs and/or their arms. In general, silhouettes that don’t rely on a traditionally structured waistline are your hardest working pieces.

Athletic Shaped Body Type aka a rectangle or straight shape.

You may be this body type if…

  • You’re not particularly curvy
  • Your shoulders and hip measurements are nearly the same
  • Your waist isn’t very small or well-defined, but rather straight up and down
  • Your weight is fairly evenly distributed throughout your body

Guidelines For Dressing The Athletic Shape

The key to dressing an athletic or rectangular shape is to balance your broad upper half by accentuating your legs and other curves. Keep the volume on top or bottom. If you go for an oversized top shape, keep the bottom skinny or structured. With a more form-fitting top, pick a breezy or more oversized pant style.
