How to use bold colours as the foundation of a good outfit

Posted on November 26 2018

Wearing bright, bold colours are the ‘in’ thing right now.  Some of us wear them better than others, but going bold is a great way to stand out and try something new! It's always a good idea to choose one bold colour that will form the basis of your outfit, giving you options with what you pair it up with.  Here are some tips to creating an outfit that pops!

Maintain the same base bold colour tone

One of the best pieces of advice when wearing bold colours is to maintain the same colour tone throughout your entire outfit. Whether you are wearing a statement piece which is floral, striped or patterned, choose a colour from within and pick that colour up in other pieces you have, such as accessories or shoes. For example, the lovely rich magenta colour has been chosen from this floral top and paired with matching shoes and accessories in a similar tone.

Let it Pop

If you wish to let your bold colour stand out and ‘pop’, pair it with neutral colours, black or denim to really give it an edge. By blending with neutrals, the colour you have chosen will be the main focus of your entire outfit.   Adding too much colour can take away from that pop.

Use the colour wheel

As unusual as it may seem one of the best ways to see if your outfit works is to use the colour wheel. Colours which are opposite to one another on the colour wheel work well in helping you really make a statement. For example, pairing purple with yellow – don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! And colours that lie alongside each other on the color wheel can also work. Colors such as light pink with a darker plum.

Accessorise!

Lastly, if you want to wear bold colours but you are new at doing so or a little wary, start small and work your way up. Begin by acquiring accessories such as jewellery, bags and shoes in a colour you love and would be unafraid to wear and go from there. Before you know you may be the boldest and brightest in the room!
